Multilens systems minimize the imaging errors of singlets. One can distinguish between monochromatic and achromatic systems.
Monochromatic systems are only corrected for a specific wavelength. So they are most suitable for laser applications. All elements can be made of one single glass type, especially fused silica, which allows the use of such lenses for collimation or focusing of high power lasers.
On the other hand achromatic systems must consist of lenses with different glass types and dispersions. Only the right combination allows the correction of the chromatic error especially in the visible range. The best correction can be made if the components are cemented. But
this process reduces the damage threshold of the system, which limits the use of laser beams to average powers of less than 200 W.
A special feature is provided by the airspace triplets, which are corrected for use at 1064 nm and colour corrected for the visible range. This allows the simultaneous inspection of the laser process through the focusing lens.
